Shipping vs hauling: moving your stuff to SF
Shipping works for boxes you will truly use and cannot replace cheaply. Hauling in a rented vehicle can make sense for a local move or a small, valuable load. Selling and replacing may win when furniture is bulky and low-value.
Price the whole move: packing materials, fuel, parking, tolls, labor, insurance, storage, shipping, and the cost of a second trip. Include your time and physical energy.
Choose the method that leaves you with a usable room, not the most possessions. In a shared home, a lighter arrival is often the better arrival.
