How to negotiate a flexible move-out date
Explain the constraint before you move in: a job end date, a pending lease, travel, or a move that depends on another person’s schedule. Ask for the exact flexibility you need, such as a one-month extension option or a window for move-out.
Offer terms the other side can use: prompt notice, a clear maximum date, cooperation with showings, or a plan to help find a replacement if appropriate. Do not promise what you cannot deliver.
Get the final agreement in writing. It should state the notice period, rent for any extra days, key return, and what happens if either side changes plans.
