Allergies and pets in a shared home
Ask about allergies before a pet joins the home. “Mild” can still mean daily discomfort, medication, or an unusable common room. The person with the animal and the person with the allergy both deserve a candid answer.
Some arrangements can reduce exposure: pet-free bedrooms, HEPA filtration, frequent vacuuming, washable covers, regular grooming, and a strict no-pet rule for certain furniture. These steps help, but they may not make a severe allergy workable.
Do not promise a fix you cannot maintain. If the living arrangement is harming someone’s health, a pet-free home or a different roommate match may be the kindest choice.
