Sharing pet duties in a multi-person household
The owner should cover the ordinary work: food, walks, litter, training, grooming, supplies, vet care, and damage. If others want to help, treat it as a favor with a clear scope, not a standing household obligation.
Use a simple written plan for exceptions. It should cover travel, late nights, emergencies, access to the carrier or leash, medication, and who can authorize veterinary care. Keep the pet’s records and emergency contact where everyone can find them.
Thank people for the help and make it easy to decline. A reliable outside sitter or walker protects both the pet and the roommate relationship.
