How to negotiate a pet with future roommates

October 20, 2024

Raise the question before anyone applies or signs. Describe the animal and the work it creates: noise, shedding, walks, litter, visitors, travel, and cost. Do not sell a pet as “no trouble”; every animal has a routine.

Ask each future roommate what would make the arrangement workable. The answer may be a pet-free bedroom, limits on furniture, a cleaning schedule, or a firm rule that the owner provides all care. Write down the agreement with the other house expectations.

If the room is split, pass on it. Consent given under pressure is not consent that will survive a long lease. A good pet arrangement starts with an easy yes.
