Bringing a dog into a shared home: the ground rules

October 24, 2024

Agree on the basics in writing: rooms the dog may enter, furniture rules, feeding, walks, guests, barking, cleanup, and what happens when the owner is away. Vague goodwill wears thin at 6 a.m. or after a chewed shoe.

The owner remains the owner. Roommates may enjoy the dog, but they are not default walkers, sitters, trainers, or bill payers. Ask before relying on anyone for care, and make a backup plan outside the house.

Give the dog a calm first week. Limit introductions, keep a predictable schedule, and correct problems promptly. A shared home works when the dog is not treated as a household surprise.
