Dish duty: systems that end the pileup
The easiest system is personal dishes washed within a set window, such as the same day or within 24 hours. Add a shared rule for cookware, dishwasher loading, and drying rack space.
If cooking is communal, rotate the cleanup or make the cook responsible unless someone volunteers. Keep a small dish bin for a roommate who needs to wash later, but do not let it become permanent storage.
The right rule is clear enough that no one needs to ask whose pan has been there for three days.
