Building an artist household on an artist's budget

December 27, 2024

Set an all-in housing budget that survives uneven income. Prioritize rent, utilities, food, transit, and a small emergency buffer. Agree on shared costs early and keep studio supplies separate from household purchases unless everyone benefits.

Buy used or borrow durable furniture, share bulk basics, and track bills in one place. Make a plan for a slow month before it arrives; surprise is more expensive than modest preparation.

An artist household works when the rent is predictable enough to leave room for the work.
