Finding a room where you can be fully yourself

February 1, 2025

During a tour, notice how people speak to one another, what rules are explicit, and whether the home feels safe to use. Ask about guests, privacy, quiet hours, shared bathrooms, and how residents handle disagreements.

You do not owe a prospective household personal disclosure before you feel ready. But you can ask values-based questions: “How do you make new roommates feel included?” or “How do you handle disrespectful visitors?”

If you feel you must shrink yourself to keep the peace, keep looking. Housing stability includes emotional safety.
