How to advocate for a friend facing housing discrimination
Ask what help they want: a witness, help saving screenshots, a place to make a call, transport to a viewing, or company at an intake meeting. Do not take over the story or contact the landlord without permission.
Help build a timeline and preserve the listing, messages, application, notices, and names. Connect the person with the San Francisco Human Rights Commission, California Civil Rights Department, tenant organization, or a lawyer as appropriate.
Practical support—food, a backup place to sleep, or a ride—can matter as much as a complaint form.
