Age discrimination in housing: what to know
California fair-housing guidance lists age among protected characteristics. A provider should not deny housing, advertise preferences, or impose different terms because they assume someone is too young, too old, irresponsible, frail, or unlikely to fit in.
Use criteria tied to the tenancy: ability to meet the stated rent, lease terms, household rules, and lawful occupancy limits. Shared-living situations can be fact-specific, but age stereotypes are not a sound screening tool.
Save any written statement connecting a housing decision to age and seek fair-housing help if you believe you were treated differently.
