Inclusive house culture: how to build one
Start with clear agreements everyone can understand: rent, chores, guests, quiet hours, shared food, pets, and how to raise a problem. Apply the rules consistently rather than giving informal exceptions to the loudest person.
Make invitations optional and information accessible. A shared calendar, written notes after house meetings, and advance notice for changes help everyone participate. Do not assume everyone shares the same holidays, diet, work hours, or comfort with socializing.
When someone says a rule or joke is excluding them, listen, clarify, and change the behavior. A good culture is repaired in small moments.
