Service animals vs pets: what landlords must allow
Service animals perform tasks for a person with a disability. Assistance animals can also include animals that provide disability-related emotional support. Fair-housing rules can require a reasonable accommodation even where a property has a no-pets policy.
The request and any needed documentation depend on the facts. A housing provider may not demand a vest, certification, or pet fee simply because an assistance animal is involved. Providers can still evaluate lawful, individualized concerns such as a direct threat or significant property damage.
Use current agency guidance rather than buying an online “certificate.”
