Source-of-income protections for SF renters

March 27, 2025

California law protects tenants and applicants from discrimination because of source of income, including rental assistance and vouchers. Examples can include a “no vouchers” ad, refusal to complete required program paperwork, or worse terms because an applicant uses assistance.

Save the listing, messages, application, and any written reason for denial. Ask for clarification in writing and avoid altering your application to hide the source of income. The facts matter, and prompt documentation is useful.

The San Francisco Human Rights Commission and California Civil Rights Department can provide complaint pathways and information.
