Why 'no vouchers' listings are illegal in California
California fair-housing guidance states that source-of-income protections include government rental assistance such as Housing Choice vouchers. A housing provider cannot simply advertise “no Section 8,” refuse required voucher paperwork, or impose worse terms because an applicant uses assistance.
Housing providers may still apply lawful, relevant criteria consistently, but they should not treat a voucher as a reason to refuse an otherwise qualified applicant. Applicants should save the listing, messages, and application materials if they encounter a refusal.
For a particular denial, contact the California Civil Rights Department or local fair-housing help.
