Deposit scams and how to keep your money safe
Scammers call a payment a holding fee, key fee, screening fee, or refundable deposit to make it feel normal. The question is not the label. It is whether you have verified the room, the recipient, and the terms.
Pay only after a viewing and written agreement. Use a documented payment method, get a receipt, and save the refund and deduction rules. Decline any demand for wire, gift card, crypto, or instant payment to a stranger.
No genuine landlord needs your money before they can show you the room.
