Taking video calls when the walls are thin
Use a headset or close microphone so you can speak softly. Face away from the wall shared with a roommate and close doors or windows if that reduces street sound. A rug, curtain, or soft furnishing can help the room feel less echoey.
Tell roommates about high-stakes calls in advance. For confidential, long, or loud calls, use a private booth, office, library room, or walk outside if appropriate.
Do not ask a household to be silent all day. Design the call setup to carry its own weight.
