How to settle up when someone moves out mid-month
Check the lease and any roommate agreement first. Decide the departing person’s final date, rent responsibility, utilities, keys, cleaning, and deposit settlement. Prorate only if the parties and lease allow it; a replacement’s move-in date may change the fair result.
Collect actual bills where possible and estimate only what has not arrived. Put every calculation in a shared message or spreadsheet. Set a final date for settling any later utility bill.
Take condition photos before keys are returned. A clean exit is mostly a recordkeeping exercise.
