How to buy shared furniture without future fights

September 3, 2025

Before buying, state the budget, who approves the item, who pays, and who owns it. If several people contribute, record the percentages and decide whether a departing roommate can take it, sell it to the household, or receive a depreciated buyout.

Keep the receipt and a photo. Avoid expensive shared purchases for a short or unstable household unless everyone accepts the risk. Personal furniture should remain personal unless explicitly sold into the shared pool.

The best rule is simple: no one is surprised when someone moves out.
