Splitting utilities fairly in a shared home
For most homes, divide recurring utilities equally among the people who live there. List every bill: power, gas, water, trash, internet, and any building charges. State who receives each bill and when reimbursement is due.
Adjust only for a clear, lasting difference, such as one person having a separate meter or a long-term absentee. Do not recalculate every shower or phone charge; it creates more conflict than fairness.
Share the invoice and payment confirmation. Transparency keeps a small bill from becoming a trust problem.
