Your rights when the building is sold

November 6, 2025

Keep paying rent as directed only after receiving reliable written notice of where payment should go. Save the lease, rent receipts, deposit records, repair requests, and every new owner or manager notice.

The buyer generally steps into the property relationship, but rent-control, eviction, deposit, and lease questions depend on the unit and facts. A sale is not itself an eviction notice. Do not sign a new lease, move-out agreement, or rent increase merely because a new manager requests it without reviewing the documents.

If the new owner changes services, demands payment, or sends a termination notice, get assistance quickly. Your existing records are the best defense against confusion during a transition.
