Source-of-income discrimination is illegal in SF: know your rights

November 12, 2025

In San Francisco, source of income is among the protected bases identified in the City’s fair-housing guidance. A landlord’s refusal to rent after learning an applicant has a voucher or other lawful income source can be evidence worth documenting.

Save the listing, application, messages, stated reason for denial, and names of people involved. Compare what was said to the treatment of other applicants only through lawful, reliable information. Do not alter your application or conceal a voucher to avoid discrimination.

You can contact the San Francisco Human Rights Commission to begin an intake for a discrimination complaint. Timely records make a stronger report.
