Illegal in-law units and your rights as a tenant
If you suspect an in-law unit is unpermitted, focus first on health and safety: exits, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, electrical condition, water, heat, ventilation, and sanitation. Document conditions and report urgent hazards to the appropriate City inspection agency.
Do not assume an unpermitted unit means you have no rights—or that a landlord may remove you without process. Occupancy, rent, notices, and eviction rules can be complicated in these homes. Likewise, a complaint can affect the housing arrangement, so seek advice before acting where possible.
