What to do if you get an eviction notice in SF
Do not ignore it. Photograph every page, save the envelope, and record when and how it arrived. Read the stated reason, the deadline, and any instruction to cure a problem. Keep paying rent unless a qualified adviser tells you otherwise.
Contact the San Francisco Rent Board for information and an eviction-defense provider or tenant lawyer for advice. If you receive an unlawful-detainer court summons, act especially quickly: court deadlines are separate from the earlier notice and can be short.
Do not accept a lockout, utility shutoff, or removal of belongings as a valid eviction. Only a legal process can remove a tenant.
