Verbal agreements between roommates: why they fail
Verbal agreements can be meaningful, but they are hard to prove and easy to misremember. A conversation about rent, deposit, or a move-out date becomes unreliable when everyone recalls a slightly different version.
Write down the essential terms right away: who pays what, when payments are due, who holds the deposit, what space is rented, and how much notice is required. A shared email or signed note is better than relying on memory; a detailed agreement is better still.
Keep receipts, screenshots, and messages with the document. Writing things down is not distrust. It gives roommates a common reference before a small misunderstanding becomes a financial dispute.
