How to remove yourself from a lease you share
Read the lease before announcing a move. A fixed-term lease may require landlord consent, an assignment, a replacement tenant, or a formal release. Simply handing over keys or finding someone informally may not remove your obligations.
Tell roommates and the landlord in writing. Ask exactly what document releases you, the effective date, whether a replacement is required, and how the deposit will be handled. Do not rely on a verbal assurance.
Document the room’s condition, settle shared bills, remove your belongings, and keep proof of notices and payments. If you remain named on the lease, assume you may still carry risk until a written release says otherwise.
