Overnight guests in a shared home: setting expectations
Discuss overnight guests before a conflict. Agree on notice, frequency, shared-space use, parking, bathroom timing, and whether a guest may stay when the host is away. Consider lease or building rules too.
One roommate’s visitor should not displace another roommate from sleep, work, or safety. A simple group message may be enough for an occasional guest; frequent stays require a fuller conversation.
If a guest behaves badly, raise it with the roommate who invited them, not by trying to manage the guest yourself. Clear expectations keep hospitality from turning into resentment.
