The polite guest's guide to a shared living room

February 22, 2026

Pack your bedding away each morning unless the household agrees otherwise. Keep your bag, cables, clothes, and toiletries in one assigned area. Do not block the sofa, television, entry, or routes to the kitchen and bathroom.

Ask about quiet hours and how the room is used during the day. Use headphones for calls and entertainment. Leave the space when others need it, rather than making the host negotiate for their own living room.

Clean up every time you use the area. A temporary sleeper who preserves the shared room’s normal function is much easier to host.
