What to offer when you sleep on a friend's couch

Start by asking whether the host is comfortable accepting money, groceries, or help with a specific expense. Some people prefer a meal, a transit card, or help with a household task instead. Their answer sets the tone.

For a short stay, bring food you will eat and replace shared supplies you use. For a longer stay, contribute regularly in a way the host can count on. Keep the arrangement voluntary; an offered payment does not give you unlimited use of someone’s home.

The most valuable contribution is often simple: respect the rules, clean up, and leave when promised. Add a genuine thank-you after you are gone.
