Couch-to-lease: turning a temporary crash pad into a home
Do not assume that staying longer means you have moved in. Ask the host directly whether a longer arrangement is possible. Give them room to say no without making the current stay awkward.
If the answer is yes, discuss rent, utilities, room or sleeping setup, move-in date, guests, chores, and how either person can end the arrangement. Confirm who is on the lease and whether the landlord’s approval is required.
Put the terms in writing and do not pay until you understand them. A stable home needs more than goodwill, especially when money and legal occupancy are involved.
If the host is uncertain, keep searching. Pressure is a poor foundation for co-tenancy.
