Couch surfing in SF: how to do it safely and gratefully

March 10, 2026

Stay with people you know or can verify through trusted connections. Confirm the address, who else lives there, where you will sleep, and the dates before arriving. Tell someone you trust where you are, keep your phone charged, and retain access to your own money and documents.

Ask about house rules, keys, showers, work calls, food, and guests. Offer help with ordinary costs and chores, but do not assume payment makes an unsafe or uncomfortable situation acceptable.

Set a departure date at the start. A couch is a bridge, not a housing plan. If the arrangement begins to feel unsafe, coercive, or unclear, leave and use a safer alternative.

Gratitude is best shown through reliability, privacy, and a clean exit.
