Finding a roommate who shares your cleaning standards

March 14, 2026

Ask candidates what “clean” looks like in a kitchen, bathroom, and living room after a normal week. Ask when dishes are washed, how often floors and bathrooms are cleaned, and how supplies are paid for.

At a viewing, inspect the common areas. A lived-in home is normal; persistent food mess, overflowing trash, or a bathroom nobody will discuss tells you more than a claim to be tidy.

Agree on a workable chore system before move-in. Compatibility matters more than the absolute standard. Two very tidy people can clash without a schedule; two relaxed people can live well with clear limits.
