How to bring up problems in a shared room without drama
Choose a calm moment, not the second you are woken up or embarrassed. Describe what happened without assigning motives: “The overhead light was on after midnight three times this week.” Then explain the effect and ask for a practical change.
Offer a solution you would accept yourself: a lamp, headphones, a guest notice rule, or a new cleaning schedule. Listen to what makes the request hard for the other person. You may need to adjust the arrangement, but you should not have to abandon the need.
Write down the new agreement if the issue has repeated. If a roommate ignores clear, reasonable boundaries, involve the person responsible for the lease or consider an exit plan.
Directness is usually less dramatic than pretending nothing is wrong.
