The pros and cons of sharing a room in your 20s

May 9, 2026

The obvious benefit is rent. Sharing a room can free money for savings, school, a career change, or a city you could not otherwise afford. It can also make a move less lonely when the roommate relationship is kind.

The cost is autonomy. Sleep, calls, clothing, guests, and recovery from a hard day all require coordination. You may grow quickly in communication; you may also find that a private room is worth a great deal to you.

Set a purpose and a review date. If the savings are helping you reach something concrete, the inconvenience has shape. If the arrangement is draining your health or work, it may no longer be a good bargain.

There is no maturity prize for enduring a housing setup that has stopped serving you.
