Shared room etiquette for early risers and night owls

May 11, 2026

Early risers should prepare the night before: clothes, bag, keys, breakfast, and a quiet alarm. Night owls should use headphones, task lighting, and a different space for long calls when possible.

Both people should announce exceptions in advance. A 5 a.m. flight, a late shift, or an exam week is easier to handle when it is not a surprise. Keep normal room activity low during the other person’s sleep window, even if that window is not yours.

If one schedule changes for months, revisit the arrangement. An agreement made for a nine-to-five job may not fit a new night shift.

Respect is reciprocal: neither roommate owns the room because they wake first or sleep last.
