Dividing a shared room fairly with a curtain, shelf, or screen
Start with the fixed facts: door swing, windows, closets, outlets, radiators, and where a bed can actually fit. Then divide access to light, storage, and walking paths—not only square feet.
A tall open shelf can define space without blocking air or daylight. A ceiling track or freestanding curtain adds visual privacy. A folding screen is flexible, but it may not solve sound or changing clothes. Keep fire exits and heaters clear.
If one side gets a window, closet, or quieter corner, compensate with rent or extra storage. Write down the plan before moving furniture. Revisit it after a week, when you know which paths and routines are real.
Fair is not perfectly symmetrical. Fair is something both people can explain without resentment.
