Room sharing 101: what it really means in SF
Sharing a room means sharing more than rent. You share light, noise, storage, sleep, and the sense of being off duty. It can make San Francisco affordable, but only when the arrangement is explicit.
Before moving in, agree on each person’s space, work and sleep schedules, guests, cleaning, food, and how either person can leave. Measure the room before deciding where beds, desks, and clothes will go. A floor plan is less awkward than a fight on move-in day.
Be clear about the legal setup too. Know who is on the lease, who collects rent, and whether the landlord allows the occupancy. Put the financial terms in writing.
Room sharing works best when neither person has to guess what the other considers normal.
