Touring a room over video call: what to look for
Ask the host to begin outside the building and walk you through the route to the room. This confirms the address, street setting, stairs, and entry process.
During the call, ask to see the room with the camera held still at each corner. Look at windows, locks, outlets, closets, ceiling, and the view from the door. Then see the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and any area you would share. Ask how many people use each one.
Have the host open a window and turn on the lights. Ask about noise at your usual sleep time, heat, internet speed, and any construction nearby. Meet at least one current housemate on camera if possible.
Video is useful for screening. Before paying or signing, verify the arrangement in person or through a trustworthy local representative.
