Questions to ask before you say yes to a room

July 12, 2026

Ask about the money first: exact rent, deposit, utilities, payment date, and what happens if someone leaves. Then ask about the legal arrangement: who is on the lease, whether the landlord knows about the room, and how long you can stay.

Ask how the home works day to day. How many people share each bathroom? What are normal quiet hours? How are cleaning, groceries, guests, packages, and repairs handled? Where do bikes, laundry, and trash go?

Finally, ask why the prior resident left and what the household hopes will be different with the next person. Listen for a straightforward answer. You are not looking for a perfect household; you are looking for people who can discuss ordinary friction clearly.

Write the important answers down. If the terms change later, your notes will tell you whether it was a misunderstanding or a warning.
