How to write a message that gets you the room
Your first message should answer the questions the poster would otherwise need to ask. Keep it human and under two short paragraphs.
Start with your name, work or school situation, and move-in date. State that the rent fits your budget. Mention one real point of fit: a quiet schedule, love of cooking, no smoking, or experience in a shared home. Then ask for a viewing.
For example: “Hi, I’m Maya, a product designer moving to SF for work on August 15. The room and your weeknight-quiet household sound like a good fit; I also work from home two days a week and keep common spaces tidy. I can tour Tuesday or Wednesday evening. Is either possible?”
Avoid a life story, generic copy, and requests to negotiate before you have seen the room. Save the deeper conversation for the tour.
