The realistic timeline for finding a room in SF
Give yourself three to six weeks when you can. A week can work, but it leaves little room to compare homes or recover from a bad lead.

Watch listings, note asking rents, and learn which blocks feel right at the times you will use them. Assemble your application packet: identification, income or savings proof, references, and a concise introduction. This is preparation, not delay.
Weeks two through four: tour and apply
Reply the day listings appear. Aim to see several homes, not one. Good rooms often move within a day or two, so schedule tours in clusters and be ready to submit paperwork after a visit you like.
Final days: verify and commit
Read the lease or roommate agreement before sending money. Confirm rent, deposit, utilities, move-in date, house rules, and who is legally responsible for the home. Never let urgency replace those checks.
If your start date is fixed, book a short, legitimate temporary stay for the first week. It is cheaper than accepting the wrong room under pressure.
